In America, 36 million adults cannot read, write, do math, or use technology above a third grade level. 

The mission of the Literacy Council of Kingsport is to provide tutoring for adults and qualified children to improve their literacy skills as well as achieve their individual goals and to be an advocate for literacy in the community.

Our History
  • The Literacy Council of Kingsport was organized in 1986 in partnership with the Kingsport Public Library  and was incorporated in 1987 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving citizens in the Greater Kingsport area.
  • In 1999, the Literacy Council became a United Way of Greater Kingsport member agency, which enabled the organization to serve more adult learners. The Literacy Council of Kingsport celebrates 30 years of service to the Greater Kingsport community in 2016.

Our Programs
The Literacy Council achieves its mission by providing trained volunteers for free one-on-one tutoring to address the following literacy areas:
  • Adult Basic Literacy
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages
  • Tutoring for Children & Youth
